Shipping containers

Intermodal container is often made of metal and commonly used for transporting unitized cargo. Usually this stands for cargo that is arranged in smaller containers, bags or cases. Sometimes package freight is transported on EUR-pallets. Intermodal containers are frequently used for shipping bulk goods and liquid cargo as well as loads that need certain conditions during shipment (for example cooling).

Construction of an intermodal container is pretty strong, which allows to use it many times without the danger of breaking the container. Every intermodal container comes with special accessories which allows transport companies to fasten it for the shipment as well as to ship it securely between locations. The tools make loading as well as unpacking intermodal containers much less difficult.

Shipping containers are especially common in maritime transport. Container ships are commonly used to transport goods from far-off parts of the world, primarily between continents. Intermodal containers do not only allow the loads to be handily loaded, but additionally enable the transport provider to pile them on top of each other, which saves space.

Container ships are mainly transporting shipping containers between continents, the inland shipping is usually provided by lorries.

Types of intermodal containers

The most popular shipping container is 20-foot long, which is about 6,1 meters. This kind of container is usually referred to as a container 1C. It has around 33 square meters. Dimensions of a 20 ft intermodal container are: 5919 x 2340 x 2380 mm.

There is also a container 1A, which is 40-ft long and its dimensions are: 2230 x 2438 x 2191 mm. In 1C and 1A containers you may transport around ten pallets. They are usually used to transport packed cargo.

You can also encounter „open top” models of the 1A and 1C containers. Their dimensions are similar to regular 1A and 1C containers, only they are opened from the top and not from the side. This type of containers is usually used to transport bulk goods.

Other type of container is metal „flat rack” container, used mainly to move large loads with atypical shapes as well as dimensions. This type of container is also available in „collapsible” version, which has foldable sides.

Different kinds of containers are: temperature controlled containers (such as heated containers) used for transporting goods that are temperature sensitive, tank containers (for transporting fluids), ventilated containers and many others.

Prices of shipping container transport

Cost of transporting an intermodal container depends on the dimensions of the container and the type of load that is being shipped in the container. Other price-defining factors are: route length and quality and potential extra work that the transport provider will have to complete in order to deliver the cargo (for example: assistance with loading and unloading).
