Shipping containers

Intermodal container is usually made of metal and generally used for transporting package cargo. Usually this means load that is packed in smaller containers, bags or boxes. At times package cargo is transported on EUR-pallets. Intermodal containers are often used for transporting bulk goods as well as liquid goods and also cargo that require special conditions while being transported (like cooling).

Construction of an intermodal container is pretty resistant, which makes it possible to use it numerous times without the danger of fracturing the shipping container. All the intermodal containers come with needed equipment which allows transport companies to fasten it for the transport as well as to move it securely between locations. The equipment makes loading and unloading intermodal containers much easier.

Shipping containers are especially popular in maritime transport. Container ships are often used to transport goods from distant parts of the world, mainly between continents. Intermodal containers do not just allow the items to be handily unloaded, but additionally allow the transport provider to pile them on top of each other, which helps to save space.

Container ships are mostly used to transport shipping containers from continent to continent, the inland transport is commonly done by lorries.

Types of intermodal containers

The most common shipping container is 20-ft long, which is about 6,1 meters. This kind of container is often called a container 1C. It has around 33 square meters. Dimensions of a 20-foot shipping container are: 1,11 x 0,9 x 0,9 ft.

Other kind of shipping container is a container 1A, which is 40-foot long and its dimensions are: 0,80 x 0,9 x 0,8 ft. In 1C and 1A containers you can ship about 10 pallets. These containers are mostly used to ship packed goods.

There are also „open top” models of the 1A and 1C containers. Their dimensions are akin to ordinary 1A and 1C containers, only they are opened from the top instead of from the side. This type of containers is commonly used to ship bulk goods.

Other kind of container is metal „flat rack” container, used generally to move large loads with uncommon shapes as well as dimensions. This kind of container also has „collapsible” variant, which has collapsible sides.

Other kinds of containers are: temperature controlled containers (like heated containers) for goods that are temperature sensitive, tank containers (for transporting liquids), open-side containers as well as many others.

Cost of shipping container shipping

Cost of transporting a shipping container hinges on the dimensions of the container and the type of load that is being shipped in the container. Additional factors that affect the price are: route length and quality as well as probable additional tasks that the transport provider will have to complete in order to finish the job (e. g. help with loading and unloading).
