Shipping containers

Intermodal container is often made of metal and frequently used for shipping unitized cargo. Usually this stands for load that is arranged in smaller packages, bags or boxes. At times unitized cargo is shipped on pallets. Shipping containers are frequently used for transporting bulk goods as well as liquid goods and also loads that need certain conditions during transport (for example cooling).

Structure of a shipping container is pretty strong, which makes it possible to use it many times with no risk of damaging the container. All the shipping containers come with needed equipment which allows transport providers to fasten it during shipment and also to move it securely between destinations. The tools make packing and unloading shipping containers much more effortless.

Intermodal containers are especially common in maritime shipping. Container ships are often used to transport items from all over the world, mainly between continents. Intermodal containers don’t only enable the loads to be quickly unloaded, but additionally allow the shipping provider to stack them on top of each other, which saves space.

Container ships are mostly transporting shipping containers between continents, the inland transport is commonly provided by lorries.

Kinds of intermodal containers

The most common intermodal container is 20-ft long, which is around 6,1 meters. This kind of container is often referred to as a container 1C. It has around 33 m2. Dimensions of a 20 ft intermodal container are: 5919 x 2340 x 2380 mm.

Other kind of intermodal container is a container 1A, which is 40-foot long and its dimensions are: 0,80 x 0,9 x 0,8 ft. In 1C and 1A containers you may ship about ten pallets. These containers are usually used to transport packed cargo.

There are also „open top” versions of the 1A and 1C containers. Their dimensions are akin to regular 1A and 1C containers, only they are opened from the top and not from the side. This type of containers is commonly used to transport bulk cargo.

Other kind of container is metal „flat rack” container, used mainly to ship big cargo with unusual shapes as well as dimensions. This kind of container is also available in „collapsible” variant, which has foldable walls.

Other kinds of containers are: temperature controlled containers (like refrigerated containers) for loads that are temperature sensitive, tank containers (for shipping fluids), ventilated containers as well as many others.

Prices of intermodal container transport

Price of shipping a shipping container depends on the dimensions of the container and the kind of load that is being transported in the container. Additional price-defining factors are: route length and quality as well as potential additional work that the transport provider will have to complete in order to deliver the cargo (e. g. assistance with loading and unloading).
