Shipping containers

Intermodal container is normally made of metal and frequently used for shipping package freight. Usually that stands for load that is packed in smaller packets, bags or cases. Occasionally package freight is transported on EUR-pallets. Intermodal containers are frequently used for transporting bulk goods and liquid cargo as well as cargo that need special conditions during shipment (like heating).

Construction of an intermodal container is pretty durable, which makes it possible to use it many times without the danger of fracturing the container. Every intermodal container comes with needed equipment which allows transport companies to fasten it during transport as well as to move it securely between places. The accessories make loading and unloading intermodal containers much more effortless.

Intermodal containers are especially common in maritime shipping. Container ships are often used to transport items from all over the world, primarily between continents. Shipping containers don’t just allow the items to be quickly loaded, but additionally enable the transport provider to stack them on top of each other, which saves space.

Container ships are usually used to transport shipping containers between continents, the inland shipping is commonly provided by trucks.

Kinds of intermodal containers

The most common shipping container is 20-foot long, which is about 6,1 meters. This kind of container is usually referred to as a container 1C. It has around 33 square meters. Dimensions of a 20-foot intermodal container are: 5919 x 2340 x 2380 mm.

Other kind of shipping container is a container 1A, which is 40-ft long and its dimensions are: 0,80 x 0,9 x 0,8 ft. In 1C and 1A containers you can ship about ten pallets. These containers are mostly used to transport packed goods.

There are also „open top” versions of the 1A and 1C containers. Their dimensions are similar to ordinary 1A and 1C containers, except they are opened from the top instead of from the side. This type of containers is usually used to ship bulk cargo.

Other kind of container is metal „flat rack” container, used generally to ship big loads with atypical shapes as well as dimensions. This type of container is also available in „collapsible” variant, which has foldable sides.

Different types of containers are: temperature controlled containers (like refrigerated containers) for loads that are temperature sensitive, tank containers (for shipping fluids), open-side containers and many others.

Prices of shipping container transport

Price of transporting an intermodal container depends on the dimensions of the container as well as the type of cargo that is being transported in the container. Additional factors that affect the price are: route length and quality and potential extra tasks that the transport provider will need to complete in order to deliver the cargo (e. g. help with loading and unloading).
