Shipping containers

Intermodal container is usually made of metal and usually used for shipping package freight. Usually this stands for cargo that is arranged in smaller packages, bags or cases. Sometimes unitized cargo is transported on pallets. Intermodal containers are often used for shipping granular materials as well as liquid loads as well as loads that require special conditions while being transported (e. g. cooling).

Structure of a shipping container is vastly strong, which makes it possible to use it numerous times without the danger of fracturing the intermodal container. Every intermodal container comes with needed tools which enables transport companies to fasten it during shipment as well as to move it safely between places. The accessories make packing and unloading shipping containers much easier.

Intermodal containers are particulary popular in maritime transport. Container ships are often used to ship items from all over the world, primarily from continent to continent. Shipping containers do not only enable the items to be conveniently unloaded, but additionally allow the transport provider to stack them on top of each other, which helps to save space.

Container ships are mainly used to transport shipping containers from continent to continent, the inland transport is commonly done by trucks.

Kinds of intermodal containers

The most popular intermodal container is 20-ft long, which is about 6,1 m. This kind of container is often called a container 1C. It has around 33 square meters. Dimensions of a 20-foot intermodal container are: 5919 x 2340 x 2380 mm.

Other kind of shipping container is a container 1A, which is 40-ft long and its dimensions are: 0,80 x 0,9 x 0,8 ft. In 1C and 1A containers you can ship about ten pallets. These containers are mostly used to transport packed goods.

There are also „open top” versions of the 1A and 1C containers. Their dimensions are akin to common 1A and 1C containers, only they are opened from the top and not from the side. This type of containers is commonly used to transport bulk goods.

Other type of container is metal „flat rack” container, used mostly to transport big cargo with unusual shapes and dimensions. This kind of container also has „collapsible” version, which has foldable sides.

Other kinds of containers are: temperature controlled containers (such as heated containers) used for transporting goods that are temperature sensitive, tank containers (for transporting fluids), ventilated containers and many more.

Cost of intermodal container shipping

Cost of shipping an intermodal container depends on the dimensions of the container as well as the kind of load that is being transported in the container. Additional price-defining factors are: route length and quality as well as potential extra work that the transport provider will need to complete in order to finish the job ( like assistance with loading and unloading).
