Shipping containers

Intermodal container is normally made of metal and commonly used for shipping unitized cargo. Usually this means cargo that is packed in smaller containers, bags or cases. Sometimes package cargo is shipped on EUR-pallets. Intermodal containers are often used for shipping granular materials and liquid loads as well as cargo that need certain conditions during shipment (like cooling).

Construction of a shipping container is very resistant, which makes it possible to use it many times without the risk of damaging the shipping container. Every intermodal container comes with needed tools which allows transport providers to secure it for the transport and also to transport it securely between locations. The accessories make packing and unpacking intermodal containers much less difficult.

Intermodal containers are especially popular in maritime shipping. Container ships are widely used to ship items from far-off parts of the world, primarily from continent to continent. Intermodal containers don’t just enable the goods to be quickly unloaded, but also enable the shipping provider to stack them on top of each other, which saves space.

Container ships are mainly transporting shipping containers between continents, the inland transport is commonly done by lorries.

Kinds of shipping containers

The most frequently used shipping container is 20-ft long, which is around 6,1 meters. This kind of container is often referred to as a container 1C. It has around 33 square meters. Dimensions of a 20-foot shipping container are: 5919 x 2340 x 2380 mm.

There is also a container 1A, which is 40-ft long and its dimensions are: 0,80 x 0,9 x 0,8 ft. In 1C and 1A containers you may ship around 10 pallets. These containers are usually used to ship packed goods.

You can also encounter „open top” models of the 1A and 1C containers. Their dimensions are akin to ordinary 1A and 1C containers, only they are opened from the top instead of from the side. This type of containers is commonly used to transport bulk cargo.

Another type of container is metal „flat rack” container, used mainly to transport big loads with uncommon shapes and dimensions. This kind of container also has „collapsible” version, which has collapsible sides.

Different kinds of containers are: temperature controlled containers (such as refrigerated containers) used for transporting goods that are temperature sensitive, tank containers (for shipping liquids), ventilated containers as well as many others.

Cost of intermodal container shipping

Cost of transporting an intermodal container depends on the dimensions of the container and the kind of load that is being shipped in the container. Additional factors that affect the price are: route length and quality and potential additional work that the transport provider will have to complete in order to finish the job (e. g. assistance with loading and unloading).
