Shipping containers

Intermodal container is usually made of metal and usually used for transporting unitized cargo. Normally this means cargo that is arranged in smaller packages, bags or boxes. At times package freight is shipped on EUR-pallets. Shipping containers are often used for transporting granular materials as well as liquid cargo as well as loads that need special conditions during transport (for example heating).

Structure of a shipping container is very durable, which makes it possible to use it many times without the risk of damaging the intermodal container. All the shipping containers come with professional accessories which allows transport companies to fasten it during shipment as well as to transport it securely between destinations. The accessories make loading and unloading intermodal containers much more effortless.

Shipping containers are particulary common in maritime transport. Container ships are widely used to ship goods from distant parts of the world, mainly from continent to continent. Intermodal containers do not only enable the items to be handily loaded, but additionally allow the shipping provider to pile them on top of each other, which helps to save space.

Container ships are mostly transporting shipping containers between continents, the inland shipping is usually provided by lorries.

Kinds of intermodal containers

The most frequently used intermodal container is 20-foot long, which is about 6,1 m. This kind of container is usually called a container 1C. It has about 33 square meters. Dimensions of a 20-foot shipping container are: 1,11 x 0,9 x 0,9 ft.

Other kind of shipping container is a container 1A, which is 40-ft long and its dimensions are: 2230 x 2438 x 2191 mm. In 1C and 1A containers you can ship around ten pallets. They are mostly used to transport packed goods.

There are also „open top” models of the 1A and 1C containers. Their dimensions are similar to ordinary 1A and 1C containers, except they are opened from the top instead of from the side. This type of containers is commonly used to ship bulk goods.

Another kind of container is metal „flat rack” container, used chiefly to transport big cargo with uncommon shapes as well as dimensions. This kind of container also has „collapsible” variant, which has foldable sides.

Different kinds of containers are: temperature controlled containers (like heated containers) used for transporting loads that are temperature sensitive, tank containers (for transporting fluids), open-side containers and many others.

Cost of intermodal container transport

Cost of shipping a shipping container depends on the dimensions of the container as well as the type of load that is being transported in the container. Other price-defining factors are: route length and quality and possible additional tasks that the transport provider will have to complete in order to deliver the cargo (for example: assistance with loading and unloading).
