Shipping containers

Intermodal container is often made of metal and frequently used for transporting unitized cargo. Normally that means load that is packed in smaller containers, bags or cases. Sometimes package cargo is transported on pallets. Intermodal containers are often used for transporting bulk goods and liquid cargo and also cargo that require certain conditions during shipment (e. g. heating).

Construction of an intermodal container is very resistant, which makes it possible to use it numerous times with no risk of breaking the intermodal container. All the intermodal containers come with professional tools which allows transport providers to fasten it for the shipment and also to transport it safely between places. The tools make loading as well as unloading intermodal containers much less difficult.

Shipping containers are especially common in maritime shipping. Container ships are commonly used to ship goods from distant parts of the world, mainly from continent to continent. Shipping containers do not only enable the items to be conveniently loaded, but also enable the shipping provider to pile them on top of each other, which helps to save space.

Container ships are mainly transporting shipping containers between continents, the inland transport is usually provided by trucks.

Kinds of shipping containers

The most common intermodal container is 20-foot long, which is about 6,1 meters. This type of container is usually called a container 1C. It has around 33 square meters. Dimensions of a 20 ft shipping container are: 5919 x 2340 x 2380 mm.

Other kind of intermodal container is a container 1A, which is 40-foot long and its dimensions are: 0,80 x 0,9 x 0,8 ft. In 1C and 1A containers you may ship about ten pallets. These containers are usually used to transport packed cargo.

You can also encounter „open top” versions of the 1A and 1C containers. Their dimensions are similar to common 1A and 1C containers, only they are opened from the top instead of from the side. This type of containers is often used to ship bulk cargo.

Other kind of container is metal „flat rack” container, used chiefly to transport large loads with unusual shapes and dimensions. This kind of container also has „collapsible” variant, which has foldable walls.

Other types of containers are: temperature controlled containers (like heated containers) for loads that are temperature sensitive, tank containers (for shipping fluids), ventilated containers as well as many more.

Cost of shipping container shipping

Price of shipping an intermodal container depends on the dimensions of the container as well as the kind of cargo that is being shipped in the container. Additional factors that affect the price are: route length and quality and probable extra tasks that the transport provider will need to complete in order to deliver the cargo (for example: help with loading and unloading).
