Shipping containers

Shipping container is normally made of metal and commonly used for shipping unitized cargo. Usually that stands for cargo that is arranged in smaller packets, bags or cases. At times unitized cargo is transported on pallets. Shipping containers are often used for shipping granular materials as well as liquid goods as well as loads that require special conditions during transport (like cooling).

Construction of a shipping container is pretty strong, which makes it possible to use it numerous times with no risk of fracturing the container. Every intermodal container comes with specific tools which enables transport companies to fasten it for the shipment as well as to move it securely between destinations. The equipment makes packing and unpacking intermodal containers much less difficult.

Intermodal containers are especially popular in maritime shipping. Container ships are commonly used to transport items from far-off parts of the world, primarily between continents. Intermodal containers don’t only enable the loads to be easily unloaded, but also enable the shipping provider to pile them on top of each other, which saves space.

Container ships are mostly transporting shipping containers between continents, the inland shipping is usually done by trucks.

Kinds of shipping containers

The most popular shipping container is 20-foot long, which is around 6,1 m. This type of container is usually referred to as a container 1C. It has about 33 m2. Dimensions of a 20 ft shipping container are: 5919 x 2340 x 2380 mm.

Other type of intermodal container is a container 1A, which is 40-ft long and its dimensions are: 0,80 x 0,9 x 0,8 ft. In 1C and 1A containers you may ship around ten pallets. They are mostly used to transport packed cargo.

There are also „open top” versions of the 1A and 1C containers. Their dimensions are similar to common 1A and 1C containers, except they are opened from the top instead of from the side. This type of containers is usually used to transport bulk cargo.

Another type of container is metal „flat rack” container, used mainly to move large cargo with unusual shapes as well as dimensions. This type of container also has „collapsible” version, which has collapsible sides.

Other types of containers are: temperature controlled containers (like refrigerated containers) used for transporting loads that are temperature sensitive, tank containers (for shipping liquids), ventilated containers as well as many others.

Prices of shipping container shipping

Cost of shipping a shipping container hinges on the dimensions of the container and the type of cargo that is being shipped in the container. Other factors that affect the price are: route length and quality and probable extra work that the transport provider will need to complete in order to deliver the cargo (e. g. assistance with loading and unloading).
