Shipping containers

Shipping container is often made of metal and usually used for transporting unitized cargo. Normally this means cargo that is arranged in smaller packages, bags or cases. At times unitized cargo is transported on pallets. Shipping containers are often used for transporting bulk goods as well as liquid goods and also loads that need specific conditions while being shipped (for example heating).

Construction of a shipping container is vastly durable, which allows to use it numerous times with no risk of damaging the shipping container. Every intermodal container comes with needed accessories which enables transport providers to secure it for the shipment as well as to transport it securely between locations. The accessories make loading as well as unpacking shipping containers much less difficult.

Intermodal containers are particulary popular in maritime shipping. Container ships are commonly used to transport items from distant parts of the world, primarily from continent to continent. Intermodal containers don’t just allow the items to be easily loaded, but also enable the shipping provider to pile them on top of each other, which helps to save space.

Container ships are usually transporting shipping containers between continents, the inland shipping is commonly provided by trucks.

Types of intermodal containers

The most frequently used shipping container is 20-foot long, which is about 6,1 m. This kind of container is often called a container 1C. It has around 33 m2. Dimensions of a 20 ft intermodal container are: 5919 x 2340 x 2380 mm.

Other type of intermodal container is a container 1A, which is 40-foot long and its dimensions are: 2230 x 2438 x 2191 mm. In 1C and 1A containers you may ship about ten pallets. They are usually used to transport packed cargo.

There are also „open top” versions of the 1A and 1C containers. Their dimensions are similar to common 1A and 1C containers, only they are opened from the top instead of from the side. This kind of containers is usually used to ship bulk goods.

Other kind of container is metal „flat rack” container, used generally to move big cargo with atypical shapes and dimensions. This type of container also has „collapsible” version, which has foldable walls.

Other kinds of containers are: temperature controlled containers (such as refrigerated containers) for goods that are temperature sensitive, tank containers (for transporting liquids), open-side containers and many more.

Cost of shipping container shipping

Price of transporting a shipping container hinges on the dimensions of the container as well as the type of cargo that is being shipped in the container. Additional factors that affect the price are: route length and quality and possible additional tasks that the transport provider will have to perform in order to deliver the cargo (e. g. assistance with loading and unloading).
