Shipping containers

Shipping container is normally made of metal and usually used for transporting package freight. Normally that stands for load that is packed in smaller containers, bags or cases. Occasionally unitized cargo is transported on pallets. Intermodal containers are frequently used for shipping bulk goods as well as liquid loads and also cargo that need special conditions while being transported (e. g. cooling).

Structure of an intermodal container is very strong, which allows to use it many times with no danger of breaking the intermodal container. All the intermodal containers come with special equipment which allows transport companies to secure it during shipment and also to ship it safely between locations. The accessories make packing and unloading intermodal containers much more effortless.

Intermodal containers are especially common in maritime transport. Container ships are often used to transport goods from far-off parts of the world, mainly from continent to continent. Intermodal containers don’t just allow the loads to be easily loaded, but additionally enable the transport provider to stack them on top of each other, which saves space.

Container ships are mainly transporting shipping containers from continent to continent, the inland transport is usually provided by trucks.

Types of intermodal containers

The most popular shipping container is 20-ft long, which is about 6,1 m. This type of container is often referred to as a container 1C. It has around 33 square meters. Dimensions of a 20-foot shipping container are: 5919 x 2340 x 2380 mm.

Other type of intermodal container is a container 1A, which is 40-foot long and its dimensions are: 2230 x 2438 x 2191 mm. In 1C and 1A containers you can transport about 10 pallets. They are mostly used to ship packed cargo.

You can also encounter „open top” models of the 1A and 1C containers. Their dimensions are akin to common 1A and 1C containers, only they are opened from the top instead of from the side. This type of containers is usually used to ship bulk cargo.

Another type of container is metal „flat rack” container, used mainly to ship big cargo with uncommon shapes and dimensions. This type of container is also available in „collapsible” version, which has foldable walls.

Other types of containers are: temperature controlled containers (such as heated containers) for cargo that is temperature sensitive, tank containers (for shipping fluids), ventilated containers and many others.

Prices of intermodal container shipping

Price of shipping an intermodal container hinges on the dimensions of the container and the kind of cargo that is being transported in the container. Additional factors that affect the price are: route length and quality as well as possible additional tasks that the transport provider will have to complete in order to deliver the cargo ( like assistance with loading and unloading).
