Shipping containers

Shipping container is usually made of metal and generally used for shipping package cargo. Normally this means cargo that is packed in smaller containers, bags or boxes. Occasionally unitized cargo is shipped on pallets. Shipping containers are often used for shipping bulk goods and liquid goods and also cargo that need special conditions while being shipped (e. g. cooling).

Construction of an intermodal container is vastly strong, which allows to use it many times without the danger of damaging the intermodal container. Every intermodal container comes with specific accessories which allows transport providers to fasten it during transport as well as to ship it safely between locations. The accessories make loading and unloading intermodal containers much easier.

Intermodal containers are particulary common in maritime transport. Container ships are commonly used to transport items from all over the world, primarily from continent to continent. Intermodal containers don’t just enable the goods to be easily unloaded, but also enable the shipping provider to pile them on top of each other, which helps to save space.

Container ships are mostly transporting shipping containers between continents, the inland shipping is commonly done by lorries.

Kinds of shipping containers

The most frequently used shipping container is 20-foot long, which is about 6,1 m. This type of container is usually referred to as a container 1C. It has around 33 m2. Dimensions of a 20 ft shipping container are: 5919 x 2340 x 2380 mm.

Other kind of shipping container is a container 1A, which is 40-ft long and its dimensions are: 0,80 x 0,9 x 0,8 ft. In 1C and 1A containers you can transport around 10 pallets. They are mostly used to transport packed cargo.

There are also „open top” versions of the 1A and 1C containers. Their dimensions are similar to common 1A and 1C containers, except they are opened from the top instead of from the side. This type of containers is commonly used to transport bulk cargo.

Another type of container is metal „flat rack” container, used chiefly to move big loads with uncommon shapes as well as dimensions. This type of container is also available in „collapsible” variant, which has foldable sides.

Other kinds of containers are: temperature controlled containers (such as refrigerated containers) used for transporting cargo that is temperature sensitive, tank containers (for shipping liquids), ventilated containers as well as many more.

Prices of intermodal container shipping

Price of transporting an intermodal container hinges on the dimensions of the container as well as the kind of load that is being shipped in the container. Other factors that affect the price are: route length and quality and probable extra work that the transport provider will have to complete in order to finish the job (e. g. assistance with loading and unloading).
