Shipping containers

Intermodal container is usually made of metal and usually used for shipping package cargo. Normally this means load that is arranged in smaller packages, bags or boxes. At times package cargo is transported on pallets. Intermodal containers are frequently used for shipping granular materials and liquid goods and also loads that need certain conditions during shipment (e. g. heating).

Structure of an intermodal container is vastly tough, which allows to use it numerous times with no danger of fracturing the shipping container. All the intermodal containers come with special tools which allows transport companies to fasten it for the transport as well as to move it safely between locations. The equipment makes loading and unpacking intermodal containers much less difficult.

Intermodal containers are especially used in maritime transport. Container ships are commonly used to transport goods from far-off parts of the world, mainly from continent to continent. Shipping containers don’t just allow the loads to be quickly unloaded, but additionally allow the transport provider to stack them on top of each other, which saves space.

Container ships are mostly used to transport shipping containers between continents, the inland shipping is usually provided by lorries.

Kinds of intermodal containers

The most common intermodal container is 20-foot long, which is around 6,1 meters. This kind of container is often called a container 1C. It has about 33 square meters. Dimensions of a 20-foot shipping container are: 1,11 x 0,9 x 0,9 ft.

Other type of shipping container is a container 1A, which is 40-foot long and its dimensions are: 0,80 x 0,9 x 0,8 ft. In 1C and 1A containers you may ship about 10 pallets. These containers are often used to transport packed goods.

There are also „open top” models of the 1A and 1C containers. Their dimensions are similar to ordinary 1A and 1C containers, only they are opened from the top and not from the side. This kind of containers is usually used to transport bulk goods.

Other kind of container is metal „flat rack” container, used mostly to move large cargo with uncommon shapes as well as dimensions. This kind of container also has „collapsible” version, which has collapsible walls.

Other kinds of containers are: temperature controlled containers (such as heated containers) used for transporting goods that are temperature sensitive, tank containers (for shipping liquids), open-side containers and many others.

Cost of intermodal container shipping

Price of transporting an intermodal container hinges on the dimensions of the container and the kind of cargo that is being shipped in the container. Additional price-defining factors are: route length and quality as well as possible extra work that the transport provider will have to complete in order to deliver the cargo (e. g. help with loading and unloading).
