Shipping containers

Shipping container is often made of metal and commonly used for transporting package freight. Usually that stands for load that is arranged in smaller packets, bags or boxes. At times package cargo is shipped on pallets. Shipping containers are frequently used for transporting bulk goods and liquid cargo and also cargo that need certain conditions during shipment (for example heating).

Construction of a shipping container is very durable, which makes it possible to use it numerous times with no risk of fracturing the container. Every shipping container comes with specific equipment which allows transport companies to secure it for the shipment as well as to transport it safely between places. The tools make packing and unpacking shipping containers much less difficult.

Intermodal containers are particulary used in maritime shipping. Container ships are often used to ship items from far-off parts of the world, primarily between continents. Intermodal containers don’t only allow the goods to be quickly loaded, but additionally allow the shipping provider to pile them on top of each other, which saves space.

Container ships are mainly used to transport shipping containers from continent to continent, the inland shipping is usually done by trucks.

Types of shipping containers

The most common intermodal container is 20-foot long, which is about 6,1 meters. This kind of container is usually called a container 1C. It has about 33 square meters. Dimensions of a 20-foot shipping container are: 5919 x 2340 x 2380 mm.

Other type of shipping container is a container 1A, which is 40-ft long and its dimensions are: 2230 x 2438 x 2191 mm. In 1C and 1A containers you may transport around ten pallets. These containers are mostly used to transport packed goods.

There are also „open top” versions of the 1A and 1C containers. Their dimensions are similar to regular 1A and 1C containers, only they are opened from the top instead of from the side. This kind of containers is commonly used to ship bulk goods.

Another type of container is metal „flat rack” container, used mainly to ship big loads with uncommon shapes and dimensions. This kind of container is also available in „collapsible” variant, which has collapsible walls.

Other kinds of containers are: temperature controlled containers (such as refrigerated containers) for goods that are temperature sensitive, tank containers (for shipping liquids), open-side containers as well as many more.

Prices of intermodal container transport

Price of transporting an intermodal container depends on the dimensions of the container as well as the kind of cargo that is being transported in the container. Additional factors that affect the price are: route length and quality and probable extra work that the transport provider will have to complete in order to finish the job (for example: assistance with loading and unloading).
