Shipping containers

Shipping container is normally made of metal and frequently used for shipping package freight. Normally that means cargo that is packed in smaller packages, bags or cases. Sometimes unitized cargo is shipped on EUR-pallets. Shipping containers are frequently used for shipping granular materials and liquid goods and also loads that need specific conditions during transport (like heating).

Construction of an intermodal container is pretty strong, which allows to use it numerous times with no risk of damaging the shipping container. All the intermodal containers come with specific tools which allows transport companies to secure it during transport as well as to transport it securely between destinations. The accessories make packing and unpacking intermodal containers much less difficult.

Shipping containers are especially popular in maritime transport. Container ships are commonly used to ship items from distant parts of the world, mainly from continent to continent. Shipping containers don’t only enable the goods to be handily unloaded, but additionally allow the shipping provider to stack them on top of each other, which saves space.

Container ships are usually used to transport shipping containers from continent to continent, the inland shipping is usually provided by trucks.

Types of intermodal containers

The most frequently used shipping container is 20-foot long, which is around 6,1 m. This type of container is usually called a container 1C. It has around 33 square meters. Dimensions of a 20 ft shipping container are: 5919 x 2340 x 2380 mm.

There is also a container 1A, which is 40-foot long and its dimensions are: 0,80 x 0,9 x 0,8 ft. In 1C and 1A containers you may transport about 10 pallets. They are mostly used to transport packed goods.

You can also encounter „open top” versions of the 1A and 1C containers. Their dimensions are similar to common 1A and 1C containers, only they are opened from the top instead of from the side. This kind of containers is commonly used to transport bulk goods.

Other kind of container is metal „flat rack” container, used mainly to move large loads with unusual shapes as well as dimensions. This type of container also has „collapsible” version, which has collapsible walls.

Different kinds of containers are: temperature controlled containers (like heated containers) used for transporting cargo that is temperature sensitive, tank containers (for shipping fluids), open-side containers and many others.

Prices of intermodal container transport

Cost of transporting an intermodal container depends on the dimensions of the container and the kind of load that is being shipped in the container. Other price-defining factors are: route length and quality as well as potential extra work that the transport provider will need to perform in order to deliver the cargo ( like assistance with loading and unloading).
