Shipping containers

Intermodal container is normally made of metal and mostly used for transporting unitized cargo. Normally this means load that is arranged in smaller packages, bags or cases. Occasionally package cargo is transported on EUR-pallets. Shipping containers are often used for shipping granular materials and liquid cargo as well as cargo that need special conditions during shipment (e. g. cooling).

Structure of a shipping container is vastly tough, which makes it possible to use it numerous times without the risk of damaging the intermodal container. Every shipping container comes with special tools which allows transport companies to secure it for the shipment and also to move it safely between destinations. The accessories make loading and unloading shipping containers much more effortless.

Intermodal containers are particulary used in maritime transport. Container ships are commonly used to transport items from far-off parts of the world, primarily between continents. Intermodal containers do not only allow the items to be handily unloaded, but also enable the transport provider to pile them on top of each other, which helps to save space.

Container ships are mostly transporting shipping containers from continent to continent, the inland transport is usually provided by trucks.

Kinds of intermodal containers

The most common intermodal container is 20-ft long, which is about 6,1 meters. This type of container is usually referred to as a container 1C. It has about 33 square meters. Dimensions of a 20 ft shipping container are: 5919 x 2340 x 2380 mm.

Other kind of intermodal container is a container 1A, which is 40-ft long and its dimensions are: 2230 x 2438 x 2191 mm. In 1C and 1A containers you may ship about ten pallets. These containers are often used to ship packed goods.

There are also „open top” versions of the 1A and 1C containers. Their dimensions are similar to regular 1A and 1C containers, only they are opened from the top and not from the side. This type of containers is commonly used to transport bulk goods.

Another kind of container is metal „flat rack” container, used generally to move big loads with atypical shapes as well as dimensions. This kind of container is also available in „collapsible” version, which has collapsible sides.

Different types of containers are: temperature controlled containers (like refrigerated containers) used for transporting cargo that is temperature sensitive, tank containers (for shipping liquids), open-side containers as well as many more.

Prices of intermodal container shipping

Price of transporting an intermodal container depends on the dimensions of the container as well as the kind of cargo that is being shipped in the container. Other factors that affect the price are: route length and quality and possible extra tasks that the transport provider will have to complete in order to finish the job ( like assistance with loading and unloading).
