Shipping containers

Intermodal container is usually made of metal and commonly used for transporting unitized cargo. Usually this stands for load that is arranged in smaller containers, bags or cases. Occasionally unitized cargo is shipped on pallets. Intermodal containers are often used for transporting bulk goods as well as liquid cargo as well as cargo that need special conditions during shipment (e. g. heating).

Structure of an intermodal container is pretty durable, which allows to use it many times with no risk of breaking the shipping container. Every shipping container comes with specific tools which allows transport companies to secure it during shipment as well as to transport it safely between locations. The accessories make packing and unpacking intermodal containers much more effortless.

Intermodal containers are particulary popular in maritime transport. Container ships are widely used to ship goods from distant parts of the world, mainly from continent to continent. Shipping containers don’t just enable the loads to be easily loaded, but additionally enable the transport provider to pile them on top of each other, which helps to save space.

Container ships are usually used to transport shipping containers from continent to continent, the inland shipping is commonly done by trucks.

Types of intermodal containers

The most frequently used shipping container is 20-foot long, which is around 6,1 m. This type of container is usually referred to as a container 1C. It has around 33 square meters. Dimensions of a 20-foot shipping container are: 5919 x 2340 x 2380 mm.

Other type of intermodal container is a container 1A, which is 40-ft long and its dimensions are: 2230 x 2438 x 2191 mm. In 1C and 1A containers you may ship around ten pallets. They are often used to transport packed cargo.

You can also encounter „open top” versions of the 1A and 1C containers. Their dimensions are akin to regular 1A and 1C containers, only they are opened from the top and not from the side. This type of containers is commonly used to transport bulk goods.

Other type of container is metal „flat rack” container, used chiefly to transport big cargo with atypical shapes as well as dimensions. This type of container is also available in „collapsible” version, which has collapsible walls.

Different kinds of containers are: temperature controlled containers (such as heated containers) for loads that are temperature sensitive, tank containers (for shipping liquids), ventilated containers as well as many others.

Prices of intermodal container shipping

Cost of transporting a shipping container hinges on the dimensions of the container as well as the kind of cargo that is being shipped in the container. Additional factors that affect the price are: route length and quality and possible extra tasks that the transport provider will have to perform in order to deliver the cargo (for example: assistance with loading and unloading).
