Shipping containers

Intermodal container is often made of metal and mostly used for shipping package cargo. Normally that means load that is packed in smaller packages, bags or cases. At times package cargo is shipped on pallets. Shipping containers are frequently used for transporting granular materials as well as liquid cargo as well as cargo that need specific conditions during shipment (like heating).

Construction of an intermodal container is pretty strong, which makes it possible to use it many times with no risk of fracturing the shipping container. Every shipping container comes with specific equipment which enables transport companies to fasten it during transport and also to transport it securely between places. The accessories make loading and unloading shipping containers much more effortless.

Intermodal containers are particulary common in maritime transport. Container ships are often used to transport goods from distant parts of the world, mainly from continent to continent. Shipping containers don’t only enable the items to be conveniently unloaded, but additionally enable the transport provider to pile them on top of each other, which saves space.

Container ships are usually used to transport shipping containers between continents, the inland transport is usually provided by lorries.

Kinds of shipping containers

The most frequently used shipping container is 20-foot long, which is around 6,1 meters. This kind of container is often referred to as a container 1C. It has around 33 m2. Dimensions of a 20 ft shipping container are: 5919 x 2340 x 2380 mm.

Other type of shipping container is a container 1A, which is 40-foot long and its dimensions are: 0,80 x 0,9 x 0,8 ft. In 1C and 1A containers you may transport around 10 pallets. These containers are usually used to transport packed cargo.

You can also encounter „open top” models of the 1A and 1C containers. Their dimensions are akin to ordinary 1A and 1C containers, except they are opened from the top and not from the side. This kind of containers is commonly used to ship bulk goods.

Another kind of container is metal „flat rack” container, used chiefly to transport big loads with uncommon shapes and dimensions. This kind of container is also available in „collapsible” version, which has collapsible walls.

Different types of containers are: temperature controlled containers (such as heated containers) used for transporting goods that are temperature sensitive, tank containers (for transporting fluids), ventilated containers and many more.

Cost of intermodal container transport

Price of transporting an intermodal container depends on the dimensions of the container as well as the kind of cargo that is being transported in the container. Additional price-defining factors are: route length and quality as well as potential extra tasks that the transport provider will have to perform in order to finish the job (e. g. assistance with loading and unloading).
