Shipping containers

Intermodal container is normally made of metal and usually used for shipping package freight. Normally that means load that is arranged in smaller packets, bags or boxes. Sometimes unitized cargo is transported on EUR-pallets. Intermodal containers are often used for transporting bulk goods as well as liquid goods as well as loads that require certain conditions while being shipped (e. g. cooling).

Construction of an intermodal container is very durable, which allows to use it many times with no danger of fracturing the shipping container. All the intermodal containers come with special equipment which allows transport providers to secure it for the shipment and also to transport it safely between places. The tools make packing as well as unloading shipping containers much more effortless.

Shipping containers are particulary popular in maritime shipping. Container ships are commonly used to ship items from all over the world, primarily from continent to continent. Intermodal containers do not just enable the loads to be conveniently unloaded, but also enable the shipping provider to stack them on top of each other, which saves space.

Container ships are mostly transporting shipping containers from continent to continent, the inland shipping is commonly provided by lorries.

Types of intermodal containers

The most common shipping container is 20-ft long, which is about 6,1 meters. This kind of container is often called a container 1C. It has around 33 m2. Dimensions of a 20-foot shipping container are: 1,11 x 0,9 x 0,9 ft.

Other type of shipping container is a container 1A, which is 40-foot long and its dimensions are: 0,80 x 0,9 x 0,8 ft. In 1C and 1A containers you can ship about 10 pallets. These containers are mostly used to transport packed goods.

You can also encounter „open top” models of the 1A and 1C containers. Their dimensions are akin to ordinary 1A and 1C containers, only they are opened from the top instead of from the side. This type of containers is commonly used to ship bulk goods.

Another type of container is metal „flat rack” container, used chiefly to ship big loads with uncommon shapes and dimensions. This kind of container also has „collapsible” version, which has foldable walls.

Different kinds of containers are: temperature controlled containers (like refrigerated containers) for loads that are temperature sensitive, tank containers (for transporting fluids), ventilated containers and many others.

Prices of shipping container transport

Price of transporting a shipping container depends on the dimensions of the container as well as the kind of load that is being shipped in the container. Other factors that affect the price are: route length and quality as well as probable extra work that the transport provider will need to complete in order to deliver the cargo (e. g. help with loading and unloading).
