Shipping containers

Intermodal container is often made of metal and mostly used for transporting unitized cargo. Usually this means load that is packed in smaller packages, bags or boxes. Occasionally package cargo is transported on EUR-pallets. Shipping containers are frequently used for shipping bulk goods and liquid cargo as well as cargo that require specific conditions during transport (like heating).

Structure of a shipping container is very strong, which allows to use it many times without the risk of damaging the intermodal container. All the shipping containers come with special equipment which allows transport providers to secure it for the transport and also to ship it safely between destinations. The tools make loading and unpacking intermodal containers much more effortless.

Intermodal containers are especially used in maritime transport. Container ships are widely used to transport items from far-off parts of the world, primarily between continents. Intermodal containers don’t only enable the loads to be handily unloaded, but additionally allow the shipping provider to pile them on top of each other, which saves space.

Container ships are mainly transporting shipping containers between continents, the inland transport is commonly done by trucks.

Types of shipping containers

The most common shipping container is 20-foot long, which is about 6,1 m. This type of container is usually referred to as a container 1C. It has around 33 square meters. Dimensions of a 20-foot shipping container are: 5919 x 2340 x 2380 mm.

Other kind of shipping container is a container 1A, which is 40-foot long and its dimensions are: 0,80 x 0,9 x 0,8 ft. In 1C and 1A containers you may transport about ten pallets. These containers are mostly used to ship packed goods.

There are also „open top” models of the 1A and 1C containers. Their dimensions are similar to regular 1A and 1C containers, only they are opened from the top and not from the side. This type of containers is often used to ship bulk cargo.

Other kind of container is metal „flat rack” container, used mostly to ship big cargo with uncommon shapes as well as dimensions. This kind of container is also available in „collapsible” variant, which has foldable walls.

Different types of containers are: temperature controlled containers (such as refrigerated containers) for loads that are temperature sensitive, tank containers (for shipping fluids), ventilated containers and many more.

Cost of shipping container shipping

Price of transporting an intermodal container hinges on the dimensions of the container as well as the kind of cargo that is being shipped in the container. Other factors that affect the price are: route length and quality as well as potential extra tasks that the transport provider will have to complete in order to deliver the cargo (e. g. help with loading and unloading).
