Shipping containers

Shipping container is usually made of metal and usually used for shipping unitized cargo. Normally this means load that is arranged in smaller containers, bags or boxes. Occasionally unitized cargo is shipped on pallets. Intermodal containers are often used for transporting granular materials as well as liquid goods as well as loads that require special conditions during transport (e. g. cooling).

Structure of a shipping container is pretty strong, which makes it possible to use it numerous times with no risk of damaging the container. All the shipping containers come with needed accessories which enables transport companies to fasten it for the shipment and also to ship it securely between locations. The accessories make loading and unloading shipping containers much easier.

Intermodal containers are especially popular in maritime transport. Container ships are often used to ship goods from distant parts of the world, primarily between continents. Intermodal containers do not just allow the goods to be conveniently loaded, but also enable the transport provider to pile them on top of each other, which saves space.

Container ships are mainly transporting shipping containers from continent to continent, the inland shipping is usually done by lorries.

Types of intermodal containers

The most common intermodal container is 20-foot long, which is about 6,1 m. This type of container is usually called a container 1C. It has around 33 square meters. Dimensions of a 20-foot intermodal container are: 5919 x 2340 x 2380 mm.

Other kind of shipping container is a container 1A, which is 40-ft long and its dimensions are: 0,80 x 0,9 x 0,8 ft. In 1C and 1A containers you may transport about ten pallets. They are usually used to ship packed goods.

You can also encounter „open top” versions of the 1A and 1C containers. Their dimensions are similar to regular 1A and 1C containers, except they are opened from the top instead of from the side. This type of containers is often used to transport bulk goods.

Another type of container is metal „flat rack” container, used mostly to move big loads with uncommon shapes as well as dimensions. This type of container also has „collapsible” version, which has foldable walls.

Other types of containers are: temperature controlled containers (such as refrigerated containers) used for transporting cargo that is temperature sensitive, tank containers (for transporting fluids), open-side containers and many others.

Cost of shipping container transport

Price of transporting an intermodal container hinges on the dimensions of the container as well as the kind of cargo that is being shipped in the container. Other factors that affect the price are: route length and quality and potential extra tasks that the transport provider will have to complete in order to deliver the cargo (e. g. help with loading and unloading).
