Shipping containers

Shipping container is often made of metal and usually used for transporting unitized cargo. Normally that means cargo that is arranged in smaller packets, bags or boxes. Sometimes package cargo is transported on EUR-pallets. Shipping containers are often used for transporting granular materials and liquid cargo as well as loads that require special conditions while being shipped (for example heating).

Construction of an intermodal container is pretty strong, which makes it possible to use it many times with no danger of breaking the container. Every shipping container comes with needed equipment which enables transport companies to fasten it for the transport as well as to transport it safely between destinations. The equipment makes packing as well as unloading shipping containers much easier.

Shipping containers are particulary used in maritime transport. Container ships are often used to ship goods from far-off parts of the world, primarily from continent to continent. Shipping containers don’t just enable the items to be conveniently unloaded, but also enable the transport provider to stack them on top of each other, which saves space.

Container ships are mainly used to transport shipping containers from continent to continent, the inland shipping is commonly done by lorries.

Types of shipping containers

The most common shipping container is 20-foot long, which is about 6,1 m. This kind of container is often called a container 1C. It has about 33 m2. Dimensions of a 20-foot intermodal container are: 5919 x 2340 x 2380 mm.

Other type of shipping container is a container 1A, which is 40-foot long and its dimensions are: 2230 x 2438 x 2191 mm. In 1C and 1A containers you can transport around ten pallets. They are often used to transport packed goods.

You can also encounter „open top” models of the 1A and 1C containers. Their dimensions are akin to ordinary 1A and 1C containers, except they are opened from the top instead of from the side. This type of containers is often used to transport bulk goods.

Other kind of container is metal „flat rack” container, used generally to ship big cargo with atypical shapes and dimensions. This type of container is also available in „collapsible” variant, which has collapsible sides.

Other types of containers are: temperature controlled containers (like heated containers) for loads that are temperature sensitive, tank containers (for shipping fluids), ventilated containers and many others.

Cost of intermodal container transport

Price of shipping a shipping container depends on the dimensions of the container and the kind of cargo that is being transported in the container. Additional factors that affect the price are: route length and quality as well as probable additional tasks that the transport provider will have to complete in order to deliver the cargo (for example: assistance with loading and unloading).
