Shipping containers

Shipping container is normally made of metal and mostly used for transporting unitized cargo. Usually that stands for load that is packed in smaller packets, bags or boxes. Occasionally package cargo is transported on EUR-pallets. Shipping containers are often used for transporting bulk goods and liquid loads and also loads that need specific conditions during shipment (for example heating).

Construction of a shipping container is vastly tough, which allows to use it many times without the risk of damaging the container. All the intermodal containers come with needed equipment which allows transport providers to fasten it during shipment and also to ship it securely between places. The accessories make packing and unloading intermodal containers much less difficult.

Intermodal containers are particulary common in maritime shipping. Container ships are widely used to transport items from all over the world, primarily between continents. Intermodal containers don’t only enable the loads to be quickly unloaded, but also allow the transport provider to pile them on top of each other, which saves space.

Container ships are mainly used to transport shipping containers between continents, the inland transport is commonly provided by lorries.

Types of intermodal containers

The most common shipping container is 20-foot long, which is about 6,1 meters. This type of container is usually referred to as a container 1C. It has around 33 m2. Dimensions of a 20-foot intermodal container are: 5919 x 2340 x 2380 mm.

Other type of shipping container is a container 1A, which is 40-foot long and its dimensions are: 2230 x 2438 x 2191 mm. In 1C and 1A containers you can transport about 10 pallets. These containers are mostly used to transport packed cargo.

There are also „open top” versions of the 1A and 1C containers. Their dimensions are akin to regular 1A and 1C containers, except they are opened from the top and not from the side. This type of containers is commonly used to transport bulk cargo.

Other type of container is metal „flat rack” container, used chiefly to transport large cargo with unusual shapes as well as dimensions. This kind of container also has „collapsible” variant, which has collapsible sides.

Other kinds of containers are: temperature controlled containers (like heated containers) used for transporting goods that are temperature sensitive, tank containers (for shipping fluids), ventilated containers and many more.

Cost of shipping container transport

Cost of shipping a shipping container depends on the dimensions of the container as well as the kind of cargo that is being transported in the container. Other factors that affect the price are: route length and quality as well as possible additional work that the transport provider will have to perform in order to finish the job (for example: assistance with loading and unloading).
