Shipping containers

Intermodal container is often made of metal and commonly used for shipping package cargo. Normally that means cargo that is packed in smaller packages, bags or boxes. Sometimes package cargo is shipped on pallets. Intermodal containers are frequently used for transporting bulk goods as well as liquid cargo and also cargo that need special conditions while being transported (e. g. cooling).

Construction of an intermodal container is very durable, which allows to use it many times with no risk of fracturing the intermodal container. Every shipping container comes with special equipment which allows transport companies to fasten it for the shipment as well as to transport it safely between places. The tools make packing as well as unloading shipping containers much less difficult.

Intermodal containers are especially used in maritime shipping. Container ships are commonly used to transport goods from far-off parts of the world, mainly from continent to continent. Shipping containers do not only enable the items to be conveniently loaded, but additionally enable the shipping provider to stack them on top of each other, which saves space.

Container ships are usually used to transport shipping containers from continent to continent, the inland shipping is usually provided by lorries.

Types of shipping containers

The most common shipping container is 20-foot long, which is about 6,1 m. This kind of container is usually called a container 1C. It has about 33 m2. Dimensions of a 20 ft intermodal container are: 5919 x 2340 x 2380 mm.

Other type of shipping container is a container 1A, which is 40-ft long and its dimensions are: 0,80 x 0,9 x 0,8 ft. In 1C and 1A containers you can ship around ten pallets. These containers are often used to transport packed goods.

There are also „open top” versions of the 1A and 1C containers. Their dimensions are akin to ordinary 1A and 1C containers, only they are opened from the top and not from the side. This kind of containers is usually used to ship bulk cargo.

Other type of container is metal „flat rack” container, used generally to move large cargo with atypical shapes and dimensions. This type of container also has „collapsible” variant, which has foldable walls.

Different kinds of containers are: temperature controlled containers (such as heated containers) used for transporting cargo that is temperature sensitive, tank containers (for transporting fluids), open-side containers as well as many more.

Cost of intermodal container shipping

Cost of shipping a shipping container depends on the dimensions of the container as well as the type of cargo that is being transported in the container. Additional factors that affect the price are: route length and quality and possible additional tasks that the transport provider will need to complete in order to finish the job (for example: help with loading and unloading).
