Shipping containers

Intermodal container is usually made of metal and mostly used for transporting package cargo. Usually this means cargo that is arranged in smaller packets, bags or boxes. At times package freight is shipped on EUR-pallets. Intermodal containers are often used for transporting bulk goods as well as liquid goods as well as cargo that require special conditions while being transported (e. g. heating).

Structure of a shipping container is very resistant, which allows to use it numerous times with no risk of damaging the intermodal container. Every shipping container comes with special accessories which allows transport companies to secure it for the transport and also to move it safely between locations. The tools make loading and unloading intermodal containers much more effortless.

Shipping containers are especially popular in maritime transport. Container ships are commonly used to transport items from far-off parts of the world, mainly between continents. Shipping containers do not only enable the loads to be conveniently unloaded, but also enable the transport provider to pile them on top of each other, which helps to save space.

Container ships are mostly transporting shipping containers from continent to continent, the inland transport is usually done by trucks.

Kinds of shipping containers

The most popular shipping container is 20-ft long, which is about 6,1 m. This type of container is often called a container 1C. It has about 33 square meters. Dimensions of a 20 ft intermodal container are: 1,11 x 0,9 x 0,9 ft.

Other type of intermodal container is a container 1A, which is 40-foot long and its dimensions are: 2230 x 2438 x 2191 mm. In 1C and 1A containers you can ship about 10 pallets. These containers are often used to transport packed cargo.

There are also „open top” models of the 1A and 1C containers. Their dimensions are similar to common 1A and 1C containers, except they are opened from the top and not from the side. This kind of containers is often used to ship bulk goods.

Other type of container is metal „flat rack” container, used mainly to ship large loads with uncommon shapes as well as dimensions. This kind of container also has „collapsible” version, which has collapsible sides.

Other types of containers are: temperature controlled containers (like refrigerated containers) used for transporting cargo that is temperature sensitive, tank containers (for shipping liquids), open-side containers and many others.

Prices of intermodal container transport

Price of transporting a shipping container hinges on the dimensions of the container and the kind of cargo that is being shipped in the container. Additional price-defining factors are: route length and quality and probable additional work that the transport provider will have to perform in order to deliver the cargo (for example: assistance with loading and unloading).
