Shipping containers

Intermodal container is normally made of metal and frequently used for shipping package freight. Usually that stands for cargo that is packed in smaller containers, bags or cases. Occasionally package cargo is shipped on EUR-pallets. Intermodal containers are often used for transporting bulk goods and liquid goods as well as cargo that need certain conditions during transport (for example heating).

Structure of a shipping container is vastly tough, which allows to use it many times with no danger of breaking the shipping container. All the intermodal containers come with special tools which allows transport providers to fasten it for the transport as well as to transport it securely between locations. The accessories make packing and unloading intermodal containers much less difficult.

Intermodal containers are especially popular in maritime shipping. Container ships are commonly used to transport items from far-off parts of the world, mainly between continents. Shipping containers don’t just allow the items to be easily loaded, but additionally enable the shipping provider to pile them on top of each other, which saves space.

Container ships are mostly used to transport shipping containers between continents, the inland transport is usually done by lorries.

Kinds of shipping containers

The most frequently used shipping container is 20-foot long, which is around 6,1 meters. This kind of container is often referred to as a container 1C. It has around 33 m2. Dimensions of a 20 ft shipping container are: 1,11 x 0,9 x 0,9 ft.

Other kind of shipping container is a container 1A, which is 40-ft long and its dimensions are: 0,80 x 0,9 x 0,8 ft. In 1C and 1A containers you can transport around 10 pallets. These containers are usually used to transport packed goods.

There are also „open top” models of the 1A and 1C containers. Their dimensions are akin to ordinary 1A and 1C containers, except they are opened from the top instead of from the side. This kind of containers is often used to ship bulk cargo.

Other kind of container is metal „flat rack” container, used chiefly to move large loads with unusual shapes as well as dimensions. This type of container is also available in „collapsible” variant, which has foldable walls.

Different kinds of containers are: temperature controlled containers (such as refrigerated containers) used for transporting cargo that is temperature sensitive, tank containers (for shipping fluids), ventilated containers and many more.

Prices of intermodal container shipping

Price of transporting an intermodal container depends on the dimensions of the container and the type of cargo that is being transported in the container. Other price-defining factors are: route length and quality as well as probable additional work that the transport provider will need to complete in order to deliver the cargo (for example: help with loading and unloading).
