Shipping containers

Intermodal container is usually made of metal and usually used for transporting unitized cargo. Normally this means cargo that is arranged in smaller packets, bags or boxes. At times package freight is shipped on EUR-pallets. Shipping containers are often used for transporting bulk goods and liquid cargo as well as loads that need special conditions during transport (for example heating).

Structure of an intermodal container is vastly strong, which makes it possible to use it numerous times with no danger of fracturing the container. Every intermodal container comes with professional tools which allows transport providers to secure it during shipment and also to transport it securely between locations. The tools make packing as well as unloading shipping containers much easier.

Intermodal containers are especially common in maritime shipping. Container ships are widely used to transport items from all over the world, mainly from continent to continent. Shipping containers do not just enable the items to be conveniently unloaded, but also enable the transport provider to pile them on top of each other, which saves space.

Container ships are mainly used to transport shipping containers between continents, the inland shipping is commonly provided by trucks.

Kinds of shipping containers

The most popular shipping container is 20-foot long, which is around 6,1 meters. This type of container is usually referred to as a container 1C. It has about 33 square meters. Dimensions of a 20 ft intermodal container are: 1,11 x 0,9 x 0,9 ft.

There is also a container 1A, which is 40-foot long and its dimensions are: 0,80 x 0,9 x 0,8 ft. In 1C and 1A containers you may ship about ten pallets. These containers are usually used to ship packed cargo.

There are also „open top” versions of the 1A and 1C containers. Their dimensions are akin to common 1A and 1C containers, except they are opened from the top and not from the side. This type of containers is often used to ship bulk goods.

Other kind of container is metal „flat rack” container, used chiefly to ship large cargo with uncommon shapes as well as dimensions. This kind of container also has „collapsible” version, which has foldable walls.

Other kinds of containers are: temperature controlled containers (like heated containers) used for transporting cargo that is temperature sensitive, tank containers (for transporting liquids), open-side containers and many more.

Cost of intermodal container shipping

Price of transporting a shipping container depends on the dimensions of the container and the kind of load that is being shipped in the container. Other price-defining factors are: route length and quality as well as probable extra work that the transport provider will have to complete in order to finish the job (for example: help with loading and unloading).
