Shipping containers

Shipping container is usually made of metal and generally used for shipping unitized cargo. Usually this means load that is arranged in smaller containers, bags or boxes. At times unitized cargo is transported on pallets. Shipping containers are often used for transporting granular materials and liquid goods as well as loads that require specific conditions while being shipped (for example heating).

Structure of an intermodal container is vastly tough, which allows to use it many times without the danger of fracturing the container. Every intermodal container comes with specific tools which allows transport providers to fasten it for the transport and also to ship it securely between places. The accessories make packing and unpacking intermodal containers much easier.

Intermodal containers are especially common in maritime shipping. Container ships are widely used to ship goods from distant parts of the world, mainly from continent to continent. Intermodal containers do not only allow the items to be quickly loaded, but also enable the shipping provider to stack them on top of each other, which helps to save space.

Container ships are usually used to transport shipping containers from continent to continent, the inland shipping is usually provided by lorries.

Types of shipping containers

The most common intermodal container is 20-foot long, which is around 6,1 m. This type of container is usually referred to as a container 1C. It has around 33 m2. Dimensions of a 20 ft intermodal container are: 1,11 x 0,9 x 0,9 ft.

Other kind of intermodal container is a container 1A, which is 40-foot long and its dimensions are: 0,80 x 0,9 x 0,8 ft. In 1C and 1A containers you may ship around ten pallets. They are often used to transport packed goods.

You can also encounter „open top” models of the 1A and 1C containers. Their dimensions are similar to common 1A and 1C containers, except they are opened from the top and not from the side. This kind of containers is commonly used to transport bulk cargo.

Another type of container is metal „flat rack” container, used chiefly to transport large cargo with uncommon shapes and dimensions. This kind of container also has „collapsible” version, which has collapsible sides.

Different types of containers are: temperature controlled containers (such as heated containers) used for transporting goods that are temperature sensitive, tank containers (for transporting fluids), open-side containers as well as many others.

Cost of shipping container shipping

Cost of shipping a shipping container depends on the dimensions of the container and the type of cargo that is being shipped in the container. Additional factors that affect the price are: route length and quality as well as possible additional work that the transport provider will have to perform in order to deliver the cargo (e. g. assistance with loading and unloading).
