Shipping containers

Shipping container is normally made of metal and mostly used for transporting package cargo. Normally this means cargo that is arranged in smaller containers, bags or cases. At times unitized cargo is shipped on pallets. Intermodal containers are often used for transporting granular materials as well as liquid cargo as well as loads that require specific conditions while being transported (e. g. heating).

Structure of an intermodal container is very durable, which makes it possible to use it numerous times with no risk of breaking the shipping container. Every shipping container comes with professional tools which enables transport companies to secure it during shipment as well as to ship it securely between locations. The equipment makes loading as well as unloading shipping containers much easier.

Intermodal containers are particulary common in maritime shipping. Container ships are commonly used to transport goods from all over the world, mainly from continent to continent. Intermodal containers do not only enable the items to be easily unloaded, but additionally allow the transport provider to stack them on top of each other, which saves space.

Container ships are mostly transporting shipping containers between continents, the inland shipping is commonly provided by lorries.

Kinds of shipping containers

The most frequently used shipping container is 20-ft long, which is about 6,1 m. This type of container is usually referred to as a container 1C. It has around 33 square meters. Dimensions of a 20-foot shipping container are: 1,11 x 0,9 x 0,9 ft.

Other kind of intermodal container is a container 1A, which is 40-foot long and its dimensions are: 2230 x 2438 x 2191 mm. In 1C and 1A containers you may transport around 10 pallets. They are usually used to ship packed cargo.

You can also encounter „open top” models of the 1A and 1C containers. Their dimensions are similar to ordinary 1A and 1C containers, only they are opened from the top instead of from the side. This kind of containers is often used to ship bulk goods.

Other kind of container is metal „flat rack” container, used mostly to transport large loads with unusual shapes as well as dimensions. This type of container is also available in „collapsible” variant, which has foldable sides.

Different types of containers are: temperature controlled containers (like heated containers) used for transporting goods that are temperature sensitive, tank containers (for shipping fluids), ventilated containers and many others.

Prices of intermodal container transport

Price of transporting a shipping container hinges on the dimensions of the container as well as the type of cargo that is being transported in the container. Other price-defining factors are: route length and quality as well as possible extra work that the transport provider will have to complete in order to finish the job (e. g. help with loading and unloading).
