Shipping containers

Shipping container is usually made of metal and frequently used for shipping package freight. Normally that stands for cargo that is packed in smaller packets, bags or boxes. At times package freight is transported on EUR-pallets. Intermodal containers are frequently used for transporting bulk goods as well as liquid goods as well as loads that need specific conditions while being shipped (e. g. cooling).

Construction of a shipping container is vastly strong, which allows to use it numerous times with no risk of fracturing the shipping container. Every intermodal container comes with needed equipment which allows transport companies to secure it during transport and also to move it safely between places. The accessories make loading and unpacking shipping containers much less difficult.

Intermodal containers are especially common in maritime transport. Container ships are commonly used to transport items from all over the world, mainly between continents. Shipping containers don’t only allow the goods to be handily loaded, but also allow the shipping provider to stack them on top of each other, which helps to save space.

Container ships are mainly used to transport shipping containers from continent to continent, the inland shipping is commonly done by trucks.

Types of shipping containers

The most popular intermodal container is 20-ft long, which is around 6,1 meters. This kind of container is usually referred to as a container 1C. It has about 33 m2. Dimensions of a 20 ft intermodal container are: 5919 x 2340 x 2380 mm.

Other type of intermodal container is a container 1A, which is 40-ft long and its dimensions are: 0,80 x 0,9 x 0,8 ft. In 1C and 1A containers you can transport around 10 pallets. These containers are usually used to transport packed cargo.

You can also encounter „open top” versions of the 1A and 1C containers. Their dimensions are akin to ordinary 1A and 1C containers, only they are opened from the top instead of from the side. This kind of containers is usually used to transport bulk cargo.

Other type of container is metal „flat rack” container, used generally to ship big cargo with atypical shapes and dimensions. This type of container is also available in „collapsible” version, which has collapsible sides.

Other kinds of containers are: temperature controlled containers (such as heated containers) for goods that are temperature sensitive, tank containers (for shipping fluids), ventilated containers as well as many more.

Prices of shipping container shipping

Cost of shipping a shipping container depends on the dimensions of the container as well as the kind of cargo that is being transported in the container. Other factors that affect the price are: route length and quality and probable extra work that the transport provider will need to complete in order to deliver the cargo (for example: help with loading and unloading).
