Shipping containers

Shipping container is normally made of metal and generally used for transporting unitized cargo. Normally that stands for cargo that is packed in smaller packages, bags or cases. Occasionally package cargo is shipped on EUR-pallets. Intermodal containers are frequently used for shipping bulk goods as well as liquid cargo and also cargo that require certain conditions during transport (e. g. cooling).

Construction of a shipping container is vastly strong, which makes it possible to use it many times with no risk of damaging the shipping container. Every intermodal container comes with needed tools which enables transport providers to fasten it for the shipment as well as to transport it securely between places. The tools make packing as well as unpacking intermodal containers much easier.

Shipping containers are particulary used in maritime shipping. Container ships are commonly used to transport items from far-off parts of the world, mainly between continents. Shipping containers do not only allow the loads to be handily loaded, but additionally enable the shipping provider to stack them on top of each other, which saves space.

Container ships are mostly used to transport shipping containers between continents, the inland shipping is commonly done by trucks.

Types of shipping containers

The most popular intermodal container is 20-foot long, which is around 6,1 meters. This kind of container is usually referred to as a container 1C. It has about 33 m2. Dimensions of a 20-foot intermodal container are: 1,11 x 0,9 x 0,9 ft.

There is also a container 1A, which is 40-ft long and its dimensions are: 2230 x 2438 x 2191 mm. In 1C and 1A containers you may ship around 10 pallets. They are mostly used to transport packed cargo.

You can also encounter „open top” versions of the 1A and 1C containers. Their dimensions are similar to common 1A and 1C containers, only they are opened from the top instead of from the side. This kind of containers is commonly used to transport bulk goods.

Other type of container is metal „flat rack” container, used generally to ship large cargo with atypical shapes and dimensions. This kind of container is also available in „collapsible” variant, which has collapsible sides.

Different types of containers are: temperature controlled containers (such as heated containers) for cargo that is temperature sensitive, tank containers (for shipping liquids), open-side containers as well as many more.

Prices of shipping container transport

Cost of transporting a shipping container hinges on the dimensions of the container as well as the type of cargo that is being shipped in the container. Additional price-defining factors are: route length and quality and possible additional work that the transport provider will have to complete in order to deliver the cargo (e. g. assistance with loading and unloading).
