Shipping containers

Shipping container is normally made of metal and usually used for shipping package freight. Usually that means cargo that is arranged in smaller containers, bags or boxes. Occasionally package cargo is shipped on EUR-pallets. Shipping containers are frequently used for transporting granular materials as well as liquid cargo and also loads that require certain conditions while being shipped (for example heating).

Construction of a shipping container is vastly resistant, which makes it possible to use it numerous times without the danger of breaking the intermodal container. All the shipping containers come with professional accessories which enables transport providers to secure it during transport as well as to move it safely between destinations. The equipment makes packing as well as unpacking shipping containers much easier.

Shipping containers are especially common in maritime transport. Container ships are widely used to transport goods from far-off parts of the world, mainly between continents. Intermodal containers don’t only allow the loads to be easily unloaded, but additionally enable the shipping provider to stack them on top of each other, which saves space.

Container ships are usually transporting shipping containers between continents, the inland shipping is usually done by trucks.

Types of shipping containers

The most popular shipping container is 20-ft long, which is about 6,1 m. This type of container is often referred to as a container 1C. It has around 33 square meters. Dimensions of a 20 ft shipping container are: 5919 x 2340 x 2380 mm.

Other type of shipping container is a container 1A, which is 40-foot long and its dimensions are: 2230 x 2438 x 2191 mm. In 1C and 1A containers you may transport about 10 pallets. These containers are mostly used to ship packed goods.

You can also encounter „open top” models of the 1A and 1C containers. Their dimensions are similar to common 1A and 1C containers, except they are opened from the top and not from the side. This kind of containers is often used to ship bulk goods.

Other type of container is metal „flat rack” container, used generally to transport large cargo with unusual shapes and dimensions. This type of container also has „collapsible” variant, which has collapsible walls.

Different types of containers are: temperature controlled containers (such as refrigerated containers) used for transporting loads that are temperature sensitive, tank containers (for transporting liquids), open-side containers and many more.

Cost of shipping container transport

Cost of shipping an intermodal container depends on the dimensions of the container and the kind of cargo that is being transported in the container. Additional factors that affect the price are: route length and quality as well as probable extra tasks that the transport provider will have to complete in order to finish the job (e. g. assistance with loading and unloading).
