Transporting a caravan

Transporting a caravan is often correlated with a lot of problems, but in fact it is much less complex than it seems. If you plan on shipping a caravan by yourself, remember to make sure that your driving license enables you to do it.

Types of caravans

1) Conventional caravan – as the name suggests, this is the most usual kind of caravan. This type has four solid walls as well as a full height rood. Mentioned type can differ in length and in the number of rooms, however in general it ensures pretty satisfying travelling conditions. Conventional caravans come in one or two axles.

B Tent trailer – this type of caravan is a good alternative if you might want to lower the costs. Tent trailer may be towed by nearly every car and usually contains the most basic equipment, like shower or a fridge. It gives you considerable living space however offers much less wind resistance than a conventional caravan.

3) Pop-top caravans -  this type is similar to conventional caravans with the exception of a expendable roof, which helps expanding the living space. Pop-top caravans, similar to a tent trailer does not provide much wind resistance.

4) Pop-out caravans – this kind of caravan has all the advantages of a pop-top caravan as well as additional pop-out area on the ends of the vehicle, which is a convienient area to fit extra beds, should you need them. Pop-out caravans are especially popular among large families.

E Camper trailers – this type of caravan offers not as much living space as most of the types mentioned above, but because of the most needed elementary equipment (shower, hot water and so on) camper trailers are considered to be a convenient and budget way of travelling.

6) The fifth-wheeler – this is the biggest type of caravan. It offers very big amount of living space, so that whole families can travel comfortably. Because of its considerable size,  the fifth-wheeler must be towed by a larger vehicle instead of a regular car (like a pickup truck).

Sometimes it is impossible to transport a caravan by yourself – it hinges on whether you have enough time to drive necessary route and whether the caravan itself is capable of covering the distance.

If you want to hire a transport company to move your caravan, confirm you have the exact dimensions of the caravan. Moreover check if its insurance hasn’t expired. In addition, inform the hauler about state of the caravan – e.g. whether lights work properly.

When relying on a transport provider to ship your caravan you don’t need to think about your driving license or crossing the borders  - all the requirements apply to the transport provider. Furthermore, transport companies frequently have product liability insurance, which will ensure you a compensation, if any damage is done to the caravan on the road.

Cost of moving a caravan

Price of transporting a caravan depends on its dimensions and weight (as it is withmost types of loads}. Additionally, the cost is also affected by the state of the caravan – if it is fully functional, you will likely pay less.
