Transporting a caravan

Shipping a caravan is usually associated with a lot of difficulties, but in fact it is much easier than it seems. If you plan on shipping a caravan by yourself, don’t forget to check if your driving license enables you to do it.

Types of caravans

A Conventional caravan – as the name suggests, this is the most common kind of caravan. It has 4 strong walls as well as a full height rood. A conventional caravan can differ in dimensions as well as in the amount of rooms, however generally it provides pretty pleasant travelling conditions. Conventional caravans may have 1 or 2 axles.

2) Tent trailer – this type of caravan is a great choice if you need to decrease the costs. Tent trailer may be towed by most of the cars , moreover it often includes the most basic equipment, such as shower and a fridge. It gives you large living space but offers much less wind resistance than a conventional caravan.

3) Pop-top caravans -  this kind is similar to conventional caravans with the exception of a lifting roof, that helps to increase the living space. Pop-top caravans, similar to a tent trailer does not offer much wind resistance.

4) Pop-out caravans – this type of caravan is equipped with all the features of a pop-top caravan and additional pop-out area on the foot and the head of the van, which is a convienient spot to place additional beds, in case you are in need of them. Pop-out caravans are the most popular among large families.

E Camper trailers – they offer less living space than the types mentioned before, but because they provide with the most needed basic equipment (shower, hot water and so on) it is a convenient and budget manner of travelling.

F The fifth-wheeler – this is the largest type of caravan. It offers considerable amount of living space, so that whole families can travel comfortably. Because of its considerable size,  the fifth-wheeler requires a larger vehicle to tow it (such as a pickup truck).

It is not always possible to ship a caravan by yourself – it hinges on whether you have enough time to drive needed distance and whether the caravan itself is capable of travelling such distance.

In case you choose to hire a transport company to ship your caravan, check if you know the precise dimensions of the caravan. Additionally make sure that its insurance is up-to-date. Moreover, instruct the transport provider about condition of the caravan – e.g. whether lights are fully functional.

When relying on a transport provider to ship your caravan you don’t have to worry about your driving license or crossing the borders  - all the regulations concern the transport provider. Furthermore, shipping companies frequently have product liability insurance, which ensures you a compensation, if anything happens with the caravan on the road.

Price of transporting a caravan

Price of transporting a caravan depends on its dimensions and weight (as it is withmost types of cargo}. Additionally, the cost is also affected by the condition of the caravan – if it is able to drive on its own, you are likely to get cheaper price.
