Transporting a caravan

Shipping a caravan is often associated with great deal of problems, but actually it is much easier than we realize. If you plan on transporting a caravan on your own, don’t forget to make sure that your driving license allows you to do that.

Types of caravans

1) Conventional caravan – as can be deduced from the name, this is the most popular kind of caravan. It has 4 solid walls as well as a full height rood. Mentioned type can vary in length and in the amount of rooms, yet generally it guarantees pretty comfortable travelling environment. Conventional caravans may have one or two axles.

B Tent trailer – this type of caravan is a fine alternative if you might want to decrease the costs. Tent trailer can be towed by nearly every car and usually includes the most basic equipment, like shower and a fridge. It provide you large living space but offers much less wind resistance than a conventional caravan.

C Pop-top caravans -  this type is very much alike conventional caravans with the addition of a lifting roof, that can increase the living space. Pop-top caravans, much like a tent trailer does not offer much wind resistance.

D Pop-out caravans – this kind of caravan is equipped with all the advantages of a pop-top caravan and added pop-out area on the foot and the head of the vehicle, which creates a convienient spot to fit additional beds, in case you are in need of them. Pop-out caravans are the most popular among big families.

E Camper trailers – they offer not as much living space as most of the types described above, but because of the most needed elementary equipment (shower, fridge and so on) camper trailers are considered to be a convenient as well as economical manner of travelling.

F The fifth-wheeler – this is the largest type of caravan. It provides with very big amount of living space, which allows whole families to travel comfortably. Due to its large size,  the fifth-wheeler requires a larger vehicle to tow it (such as a pickup truck).

Sometimes it is impossible to transport a caravan by yourself – it depends on whether you have enough time to travel necessary distance and whether the caravan itself is working.

In case you choose to hire a transport company to move your caravan, check if you have the precise dimensions of the caravan. Moreover check if its insurance is up-to-date. In addition, inform the hauler about state of the caravan – like whether brakes work properly.

When relying on a transport provider to ship your caravan you don’t have to think about your driving license or crossing the borders  - all the requirements concern the transport provider. Furthermore, transport providers often invest in product liability insurance, which will ensure you a compensation, if anything happens with the caravan during shipment.

Price of transporting a caravan

Price of transporting a caravan depends on its dimensions and weight (similar to almost every type of cargo}. Other than that , the price is also affected by the condition of the caravan – if it is undamaged, you are likely to pay less.
