Bicycles

Bicycle transport category comes in handy when you are planning a trip and you are in need of transporting your bicycle. You may also use it if you bought a bike online and you want to move it home. Another frequent reason for posting a listing in Bicycle Transport category is wanting to ship a bike as a gift to someone.

Getting the bike ready for shipping

The safest box which you can use to ship a bicycle is its original packaging. Of course, particularly if the bicycle is not brand new, you can ship it without the container but it poses the risk of damaging more delicate parts of the vehicle (such as bicycle gears). If you are no longer in possession of the original box, make sure that you will acquire a box that will be the most fitting in size and shape – the less free space left after you place the bike in the box the better. Before you place the bicycle in the container, you may want to remove all the mobile elements – like lights or saddles.  After you have detached mentioned elements, it is best to place them in separate container or enclose them in cardboard and then attach them to the bike frame. Additionally it is best to wrap the handlebars as well as the frame in bubble foil (the layer of bubble wrap should have at least 2 centimeters. Any protruding parts (like gears should be protected with cardboard overlay. Any empty space left in the container after putting the bike in should be filled with paper, bubble wrap or sponges. Filling the free space is going to absorb jolting during shipping as the bicycle will be unable to move around inside the packaging. The last step is closing the box and securing it with wide tape.

If you decide to hire a transport provider to ship your bike, you don’t have to worry about providing the materials needed to safely transport your bike – the transport provider can do that for you. Furthemore, the transport provider usually can acquire professional packing materials which will assure that your bicycle will be transported as safely as possible.

Cost of bike shipping

Cost of bicycle shipping mostly hinges on how long the route is and the size and weight of the cargo. Another price-defining factor is desired delivery date (the tougher the deadline, the steeper the price).
