Shipping containers

Shipping container is often made of metal and generally used for shipping package cargo. Usually this stands for load that is packed in smaller containers, bags or boxes. At times package freight is shipped on pallets. Intermodal containers are often used for shipping bulk goods and liquid goods and also cargo that need special conditions during transport (like cooling).

Structure of a shipping container is vastly strong, which makes it possible to use it numerous times with no danger of damaging the container. Every shipping container comes with specific equipment which enables transport companies to fasten it for the transport as well as to ship it securely between destinations. The tools make packing as well as unloading intermodal containers much less difficult.

Intermodal containers are especially popular in maritime shipping. Container ships are commonly used to ship goods from far-off parts of the world, mainly between continents. Intermodal containers do not only enable the items to be quickly unloaded, but also enable the transport provider to stack them on top of each other, which saves space.

Container ships are usually transporting shipping containers between continents, the inland transport is commonly provided by lorries.

Kinds of shipping containers

The most common shipping container is 20-ft long, which is around 6,1 meters. This kind of container is usually referred to as a container 1C. It has around 33 square meters. Dimensions of a 20-foot shipping container are: 5919 x 2340 x 2380 mm.

Other type of shipping container is a container 1A, which is 40-ft long and its dimensions are: 2230 x 2438 x 2191 mm. In 1C and 1A containers you may ship around ten pallets. These containers are mostly used to ship packed cargo.

You can also encounter „open top” versions of the 1A and 1C containers. Their dimensions are similar to regular 1A and 1C containers, except they are opened from the top and not from the side. This kind of containers is commonly used to transport bulk cargo.

Other kind of container is metal „flat rack” container, used mainly to move big cargo with unusual shapes as well as dimensions. This kind of container also has „collapsible” version, which has foldable walls.

Different kinds of containers are: temperature controlled containers (like heated containers) used for transporting goods that are temperature sensitive, tank containers (for transporting liquids), ventilated containers and many more.

Prices of shipping container shipping

Price of shipping a shipping container hinges on the dimensions of the container as well as the kind of load that is being shipped in the container. Other factors that affect the price are: route length and quality and potential additional tasks that the transport provider will need to perform in order to deliver the cargo (e. g. help with loading and unloading).
