Transporting a caravan

Shipping a caravan is often associated with a lot of difficulties, but actually it is much less difficult than it seems. If you want to transport a caravan by yourself, remember to check if your driving license enables you to do it.

Kinds of caravans

1) Conventional caravan – as the name suggests, this is the most common type of caravan. It has 4 solid walls and a full height rood. A conventional caravan might vary in dimensions as well as in the number of rooms, however in general it ensures pretty satisfying travelling conditions. Conventional caravans may have one or 2 axles.

2) Tent trailer – is a type of caravan that is a good alternative if you want to decrease the costs. Tent trailer can be towed by most of the cars , moreover it often includes the most basic equipment, such as shower or a fridge. It provide you large amount of living space however offers much less wind resistance than a conventional caravan.

3) Pop-top caravans -  this kind is similar to conventional caravans with the addition of a lifting roof, that can increase the living space. Pop-top caravans, much like a tent trailer provides very little wind resistance.

4) Pop-out caravans – this type of caravan has all the advantages of a pop-top caravan and added pop-out area on the ends of the van, which creates a perfect spot to place additional beds, should you need them. Pop-out caravans are especially popular among large families.

5) Camper trailers – they offer less living space than the types mentioned before, but because of the most needed elementary equipment (shower, hot water and so on) it is a comfortable and budget manner of travelling.

6) The fifth-wheeler – this is the largest kind of caravan. It provides with considerable amount of living space, so that whole families can travel in comfort. Because of its considerable size,  the fifth-wheeler must be towed by a larger vehicle instead of a regular car (such as a pickup truck).

It is not always possible to transport a caravan on your own – it hinges on whether you have enough time to travel needed route and whether the caravan itself is working.

In case you want to hire a transport provider to move your caravan, verify if you have the precise dimensions of the caravan. Additionally check if its insurance is up-to-date. In addition, instruct the hauler about condition of the caravan – for example whether brakes are fully functional.

Moreover, transport companies often invest in product liability insurance, which will ensure you a compensation, should any damage is done to the caravan during shipment.
