Shipping containers

Intermodal container is normally made of metal and frequently used for shipping package cargo. Normally that means cargo that is packed in smaller containers, bags or cases. Occasionally package freight is transported on pallets. Intermodal containers are often used for shipping bulk goods and liquid cargo as well as cargo that require certain conditions while being transported (e. g. heating).

Construction of an intermodal container is pretty durable, which allows to use it many times with no danger of breaking the container. All the intermodal containers come with professional tools which enables transport providers to fasten it during transport and also to transport it safely between destinations. The tools make loading as well as unloading shipping containers much less difficult.

Intermodal containers are especially used in maritime transport. Container ships are widely used to transport items from far-off parts of the world, mainly between continents. Intermodal containers don’t just enable the items to be conveniently loaded, but additionally allow the shipping provider to stack them on top of each other, which saves space.

Container ships are mainly transporting shipping containers between continents, the inland shipping is usually provided by lorries.

Kinds of intermodal containers

The most frequently used shipping container is 20-foot long, which is about 6,1 meters. This kind of container is usually called a container 1C. It has about 33 square meters. Dimensions of a 20 ft shipping container are: 1,11 x 0,9 x 0,9 ft.

Other kind of shipping container is a container 1A, which is 40-foot long and its dimensions are: 2230 x 2438 x 2191 mm. In 1C and 1A containers you can transport about 10 pallets. They are mostly used to ship packed cargo.

There are also „open top” models of the 1A and 1C containers. Their dimensions are similar to common 1A and 1C containers, only they are opened from the top instead of from the side. This kind of containers is often used to ship bulk cargo.

Another type of container is metal „flat rack” container, used mainly to ship large cargo with unusual shapes and dimensions. This type of container is also available in „collapsible” version, which has foldable sides.

Other types of containers are: temperature controlled containers (like refrigerated containers) used for transporting goods that are temperature sensitive, tank containers (for transporting fluids), ventilated containers and many more.

Prices of intermodal container shipping

Cost of shipping a shipping container depends on the dimensions of the container as well as the kind of cargo that is being shipped in the container. Other price-defining factors are: route length and quality as well as probable extra work that the transport provider will have to complete in order to deliver the cargo ( like help with loading and unloading).
