Shipping containers

Intermodal container is normally made of metal and generally used for transporting package freight. Usually that stands for load that is packed in smaller packages, bags or cases. Sometimes package freight is transported on pallets. Intermodal containers are frequently used for shipping granular materials and liquid goods as well as loads that need specific conditions while being transported (like cooling).

Construction of a shipping container is vastly strong, which allows to use it numerous times without the risk of breaking the container. Every intermodal container comes with needed tools which allows transport providers to fasten it for the shipment and also to move it securely between places. The equipment makes packing and unloading intermodal containers much less difficult.

Shipping containers are particulary popular in maritime transport. Container ships are widely used to ship goods from distant parts of the world, mainly between continents. Intermodal containers don’t just enable the items to be quickly loaded, but also allow the shipping provider to pile them on top of each other, which helps to save space.

Container ships are mostly transporting shipping containers from continent to continent, the inland shipping is usually done by trucks.

Kinds of shipping containers

The most popular intermodal container is 20-ft long, which is around 6,1 m. This kind of container is usually called a container 1C. It has about 33 m2. Dimensions of a 20-foot intermodal container are: 1,11 x 0,9 x 0,9 ft.

Other type of shipping container is a container 1A, which is 40-foot long and its dimensions are: 2230 x 2438 x 2191 mm. In 1C and 1A containers you may transport around ten pallets. They are mostly used to ship packed goods.

There are also „open top” versions of the 1A and 1C containers. Their dimensions are similar to common 1A and 1C containers, except they are opened from the top and not from the side. This kind of containers is often used to ship bulk cargo.

Another type of container is metal „flat rack” container, used generally to ship large loads with unusual shapes and dimensions. This type of container also has „collapsible” variant, which has collapsible sides.

Different types of containers are: temperature controlled containers (such as heated containers) used for transporting goods that are temperature sensitive, tank containers (for transporting fluids), ventilated containers as well as many more.

Cost of intermodal container transport

Price of shipping a shipping container hinges on the dimensions of the container as well as the type of load that is being transported in the container. Additional price-defining factors are: route length and quality and probable additional work that the transport provider will have to complete in order to deliver the cargo (e. g. assistance with loading and unloading).
