Shipping containers

Shipping container is normally made of metal and generally used for shipping package cargo. Usually that stands for cargo that is arranged in smaller packages, bags or boxes. Occasionally unitized cargo is shipped on EUR-pallets. Intermodal containers are often used for transporting granular materials as well as liquid goods and also loads that need specific conditions during shipment (e. g. heating).

Structure of a shipping container is vastly strong, which allows to use it many times with no danger of damaging the intermodal container. Every shipping container comes with needed equipment which allows transport companies to fasten it for the shipment and also to move it securely between locations. The equipment makes packing as well as unpacking shipping containers much more effortless.

Shipping containers are especially common in maritime transport. Container ships are commonly used to transport items from far-off parts of the world, mainly between continents. Intermodal containers don’t just enable the loads to be handily unloaded, but additionally allow the transport provider to pile them on top of each other, which helps to save space.

Container ships are mostly used to transport shipping containers between continents, the inland shipping is commonly provided by lorries.

Kinds of intermodal containers

The most frequently used intermodal container is 20-ft long, which is about 6,1 m. This type of container is often referred to as a container 1C. It has about 33 square meters. Dimensions of a 20 ft shipping container are: 5919 x 2340 x 2380 mm.

Other kind of intermodal container is a container 1A, which is 40-ft long and its dimensions are: 2230 x 2438 x 2191 mm. In 1C and 1A containers you can ship around 10 pallets. They are usually used to ship packed cargo.

You can also encounter „open top” versions of the 1A and 1C containers. Their dimensions are akin to common 1A and 1C containers, only they are opened from the top instead of from the side. This kind of containers is usually used to ship bulk goods.

Other kind of container is metal „flat rack” container, used mostly to transport big loads with atypical shapes and dimensions. This type of container is also available in „collapsible” variant, which has collapsible sides.

Different kinds of containers are: temperature controlled containers (like heated containers) for loads that are temperature sensitive, tank containers (for transporting fluids), open-side containers as well as many more.

Prices of shipping container transport

Cost of shipping a shipping container depends on the dimensions of the container as well as the type of load that is being shipped in the container. Other factors that affect the price are: route length and quality as well as possible additional work that the transport provider will need to complete in order to finish the job (e. g. assistance with loading and unloading).
