Shipping containers

Shipping container is often made of metal and generally used for shipping package freight. Normally this stands for load that is packed in smaller packets, bags or cases. Occasionally unitized cargo is transported on EUR-pallets. Shipping containers are often used for transporting granular materials as well as liquid cargo and also cargo that require certain conditions during shipment (like cooling).

Construction of an intermodal container is pretty resistant, which allows to use it numerous times without the danger of damaging the container. Every shipping container comes with special accessories which enables transport companies to secure it during shipment as well as to move it securely between locations. The equipment makes loading and unloading shipping containers much more effortless.

Intermodal containers are particulary popular in maritime transport. Container ships are widely used to transport items from far-off parts of the world, primarily from continent to continent. Shipping containers do not only allow the items to be handily unloaded, but also allow the transport provider to stack them on top of each other, which saves space.

Container ships are mainly transporting shipping containers between continents, the inland transport is commonly provided by lorries.

Types of intermodal containers

The most popular shipping container is 20-ft long, which is around 6,1 meters. This type of container is often referred to as a container 1C. It has around 33 m2. Dimensions of a 20 ft intermodal container are: 5919 x 2340 x 2380 mm.

Other kind of shipping container is a container 1A, which is 40-ft long and its dimensions are: 2230 x 2438 x 2191 mm. In 1C and 1A containers you may ship around 10 pallets. These containers are often used to ship packed cargo.

You can also encounter „open top” models of the 1A and 1C containers. Their dimensions are akin to common 1A and 1C containers, except they are opened from the top and not from the side. This type of containers is commonly used to transport bulk cargo.

Another kind of container is metal „flat rack” container, used chiefly to transport large loads with uncommon shapes as well as dimensions. This kind of container is also available in „collapsible” version, which has foldable sides.

Different kinds of containers are: temperature controlled containers (such as refrigerated containers) for cargo that is temperature sensitive, tank containers (for transporting liquids), open-side containers as well as many more.

Prices of shipping container transport

Cost of transporting an intermodal container depends on the dimensions of the container and the kind of cargo that is being transported in the container. Additional price-defining factors are: route length and quality as well as potential additional tasks that the transport provider will have to perform in order to finish the job (for example: assistance with loading and unloading).
