Shipping containers

Intermodal container is normally made of metal and usually used for shipping package cargo. Usually that means load that is packed in smaller containers, bags or boxes. At times package cargo is transported on pallets. Shipping containers are frequently used for shipping bulk goods and liquid cargo and also cargo that need special conditions while being shipped (e. g. cooling).

Structure of a shipping container is vastly strong, which allows to use it many times with no risk of breaking the shipping container. Every shipping container comes with needed accessories which allows transport providers to fasten it during shipment as well as to ship it securely between places. The tools make packing as well as unpacking intermodal containers much easier.

Intermodal containers are especially popular in maritime transport. Container ships are widely used to ship items from distant parts of the world, mainly between continents. Shipping containers do not just enable the items to be handily loaded, but additionally allow the shipping provider to stack them on top of each other, which saves space.

Container ships are mainly transporting shipping containers between continents, the inland shipping is commonly provided by lorries.

Types of shipping containers

The most frequently used intermodal container is 20-foot long, which is around 6,1 meters. This type of container is usually called a container 1C. It has around 33 m2. Dimensions of a 20 ft shipping container are: 5919 x 2340 x 2380 mm.

Other kind of intermodal container is a container 1A, which is 40-ft long and its dimensions are: 0,80 x 0,9 x 0,8 ft. In 1C and 1A containers you may transport about 10 pallets. These containers are often used to ship packed cargo.

You can also encounter „open top” models of the 1A and 1C containers. Their dimensions are similar to regular 1A and 1C containers, except they are opened from the top instead of from the side. This type of containers is often used to transport bulk goods.

Other type of container is metal „flat rack” container, used mainly to transport big cargo with atypical shapes as well as dimensions. This type of container also has „collapsible” version, which has foldable sides.

Other kinds of containers are: temperature controlled containers (like heated containers) for loads that are temperature sensitive, tank containers (for shipping fluids), open-side containers as well as many more.

Cost of intermodal container transport

Price of shipping an intermodal container hinges on the dimensions of the container as well as the type of load that is being transported in the container. Other price-defining factors are: route length and quality and potential extra tasks that the transport provider will need to perform in order to finish the job (e. g. assistance with loading and unloading).
