Shipping containers

Intermodal container is usually made of metal and mostly used for transporting package freight. Usually that means cargo that is arranged in smaller packages, bags or boxes. Occasionally package cargo is shipped on EUR-pallets. Intermodal containers are often used for transporting granular materials as well as liquid cargo and also loads that need certain conditions while being transported (like cooling).

Structure of an intermodal container is vastly tough, which makes it possible to use it many times without the risk of fracturing the intermodal container. All the intermodal containers come with specific accessories which enables transport companies to fasten it for the shipment as well as to ship it safely between destinations. The accessories make packing and unloading shipping containers much easier.

Intermodal containers are particulary popular in maritime transport. Container ships are widely used to ship items from far-off parts of the world, mainly between continents. Intermodal containers don’t just allow the items to be easily loaded, but also allow the shipping provider to stack them on top of each other, which saves space.

Container ships are usually transporting shipping containers from continent to continent, the inland shipping is usually provided by lorries.

Kinds of intermodal containers

The most popular shipping container is 20-foot long, which is around 6,1 m. This kind of container is usually referred to as a container 1C. It has about 33 square meters. Dimensions of a 20-foot intermodal container are: 1,11 x 0,9 x 0,9 ft.

Other type of shipping container is a container 1A, which is 40-ft long and its dimensions are: 2230 x 2438 x 2191 mm. In 1C and 1A containers you can transport around 10 pallets. These containers are mostly used to ship packed goods.

You can also encounter „open top” models of the 1A and 1C containers. Their dimensions are similar to common 1A and 1C containers, only they are opened from the top instead of from the side. This type of containers is commonly used to ship bulk cargo.

Another kind of container is metal „flat rack” container, used generally to move big loads with unusual shapes as well as dimensions. This type of container is also available in „collapsible” version, which has collapsible sides.

Different types of containers are: temperature controlled containers (like heated containers) used for transporting cargo that is temperature sensitive, tank containers (for shipping fluids), ventilated containers and many more.

Cost of intermodal container transport

Cost of shipping an intermodal container hinges on the dimensions of the container as well as the kind of load that is being shipped in the container. Other factors that affect the price are: route length and quality and potential extra work that the transport provider will have to complete in order to deliver the cargo (for example: assistance with loading and unloading).
