Shipping containers

Shipping container is normally made of metal and commonly used for shipping package freight. Usually that means load that is packed in smaller packets, bags or boxes. Occasionally package cargo is shipped on pallets. Shipping containers are often used for transporting bulk goods as well as liquid cargo and also cargo that require special conditions during shipment (like cooling).

Construction of a shipping container is vastly tough, which allows to use it many times without the danger of breaking the container. All the shipping containers come with special equipment which enables transport providers to secure it for the shipment as well as to transport it safely between destinations. The accessories make packing as well as unloading intermodal containers much easier.

Intermodal containers are particulary used in maritime shipping. Container ships are widely used to ship items from all over the world, primarily from continent to continent. Intermodal containers do not just allow the goods to be quickly unloaded, but also enable the transport provider to stack them on top of each other, which helps to save space.

Container ships are mainly used to transport shipping containers between continents, the inland shipping is commonly provided by lorries.

Kinds of intermodal containers

The most frequently used intermodal container is 20-foot long, which is about 6,1 m. This type of container is often called a container 1C. It has around 33 m2. Dimensions of a 20-foot shipping container are: 5919 x 2340 x 2380 mm.

Other type of shipping container is a container 1A, which is 40-foot long and its dimensions are: 0,80 x 0,9 x 0,8 ft. In 1C and 1A containers you can ship about ten pallets. These containers are mostly used to ship packed goods.

There are also „open top” models of the 1A and 1C containers. Their dimensions are similar to common 1A and 1C containers, only they are opened from the top and not from the side. This type of containers is commonly used to ship bulk cargo.

Other type of container is metal „flat rack” container, used chiefly to move large cargo with atypical shapes as well as dimensions. This type of container is also available in „collapsible” variant, which has foldable sides.

Different kinds of containers are: temperature controlled containers (such as heated containers) for goods that are temperature sensitive, tank containers (for shipping fluids), open-side containers as well as many more.

Cost of intermodal container transport

Price of shipping a shipping container depends on the dimensions of the container as well as the type of cargo that is being transported in the container. Other factors that affect the price are: route length and quality as well as potential additional tasks that the transport provider will need to complete in order to finish the job (for example: assistance with loading and unloading).
