Shipping containers

Shipping container is often made of metal and generally used for shipping package freight. Normally this means cargo that is packed in smaller packages, bags or boxes. Sometimes package cargo is transported on pallets. Shipping containers are often used for shipping bulk goods and liquid goods as well as cargo that require specific conditions during transport (like cooling).

Structure of an intermodal container is very strong, which allows to use it numerous times without the risk of damaging the container. Every shipping container comes with professional accessories which allows transport providers to fasten it during transport and also to move it safely between destinations. The accessories make packing and unloading shipping containers much easier.

Shipping containers are particulary popular in maritime shipping. Container ships are often used to transport items from all over the world, mainly from continent to continent. Intermodal containers do not only allow the goods to be quickly loaded, but additionally allow the shipping provider to stack them on top of each other, which helps to save space.

Container ships are mainly transporting shipping containers between continents, the inland shipping is usually provided by trucks.

Kinds of shipping containers

The most common shipping container is 20-ft long, which is around 6,1 meters. This kind of container is often referred to as a container 1C. It has about 33 m2. Dimensions of a 20-foot shipping container are: 1,11 x 0,9 x 0,9 ft.

Other type of intermodal container is a container 1A, which is 40-ft long and its dimensions are: 2230 x 2438 x 2191 mm. In 1C and 1A containers you may transport about 10 pallets. These containers are often used to transport packed cargo.

You can also encounter „open top” versions of the 1A and 1C containers. Their dimensions are akin to common 1A and 1C containers, only they are opened from the top instead of from the side. This kind of containers is usually used to transport bulk goods.

Other kind of container is metal „flat rack” container, used generally to transport large loads with uncommon shapes and dimensions. This kind of container also has „collapsible” variant, which has foldable sides.

Different types of containers are: temperature controlled containers (like heated containers) used for transporting goods that are temperature sensitive, tank containers (for shipping liquids), open-side containers and many others.

Prices of intermodal container shipping

Cost of transporting an intermodal container hinges on the dimensions of the container and the type of load that is being transported in the container. Additional factors that affect the price are: route length and quality as well as probable extra tasks that the transport provider will have to perform in order to finish the job (for example: assistance with loading and unloading).
