Shipping containers

Intermodal container is usually made of metal and generally used for shipping package freight. Normally that stands for cargo that is arranged in smaller packages, bags or cases. Sometimes package cargo is transported on pallets. Shipping containers are frequently used for transporting bulk goods and liquid cargo and also loads that need special conditions while being transported (like heating).

Structure of an intermodal container is very tough, which allows to use it numerous times with no risk of damaging the container. All the shipping containers come with special equipment which allows transport providers to fasten it during shipment and also to transport it securely between places. The equipment makes packing as well as unloading intermodal containers much more effortless.

Intermodal containers are particulary common in maritime shipping. Container ships are often used to ship items from far-off parts of the world, primarily between continents. Intermodal containers do not only allow the goods to be quickly loaded, but also enable the transport provider to pile them on top of each other, which helps to save space.

Container ships are usually transporting shipping containers from continent to continent, the inland transport is usually done by trucks.

Kinds of shipping containers

The most common shipping container is 20-ft long, which is around 6,1 m. This kind of container is usually referred to as a container 1C. It has about 33 square meters. Dimensions of a 20-foot shipping container are: 5919 x 2340 x 2380 mm.

There is also a container 1A, which is 40-foot long and its dimensions are: 0,80 x 0,9 x 0,8 ft. In 1C and 1A containers you can transport around ten pallets. They are usually used to transport packed goods.

There are also „open top” versions of the 1A and 1C containers. Their dimensions are akin to ordinary 1A and 1C containers, except they are opened from the top instead of from the side. This type of containers is usually used to ship bulk cargo.

Another kind of container is metal „flat rack” container, used mainly to move big cargo with atypical shapes and dimensions. This type of container also has „collapsible” variant, which has collapsible sides.

Different types of containers are: temperature controlled containers (like heated containers) for cargo that is temperature sensitive, tank containers (for shipping fluids), open-side containers and many others.

Prices of intermodal container transport

Cost of transporting a shipping container depends on the dimensions of the container and the kind of load that is being transported in the container. Additional factors that affect the price are: route length and quality and potential extra work that the transport provider will need to perform in order to finish the job (e. g. assistance with loading and unloading).
